MERCENARIES UNBOUND

Private military services are big business. Currently, there are hundreds of firms that generate over $100 b a year in revenue (about 1/4 of the entire US military budget, and if taken in aggregate the second largest military in the world) and is growing at many times the rate of the DoD (Department of Defense).

PMCs (private military corporations) are central to the US effort in Iraq. With between 15,000 PMC (Update: 20,000) mercenaries in Iraq, they represent the second largest allied military force in theater. They are also used extensively in hot spots across the world (over 50 countries). Given this widespread use, large size, and the sensitive nature of their services; it is surprising that the industry is relatively free of regulation. P.W. Singer (author of Corporate Warriors), wrote an essay on the law and PMCs called, "War, Profits, and the Vacuum of Law: Private Military Firms and International Law" (PDF). In the essay he provides a concise overview of the current laws that relate to PMCs:

  • There is little local control. All but few states have few statutes that even recognize PMC's exist. If a nation puts too much pressure on a firm, it can simply shop nations for a permissive environment in which to base (example: Executive Outcomes). In fact, all the mechanisms typically used multi-nationals to avoid taxation or labor/environmental regulations are available to PMCs to avoid oversight. For those states in which PMCs typically operate, the legal structures and political environments are too weak to challenge PMC usage and practices (case in point is the bad behavior of Dyncorp employees in Bosnia).
  • There are few international controls. International conventions/laws propose a restrictive test for mercenary status (which is easy to circumvent via legal means). Further, the corporate nature of current mercenary efforts makes legal action against individual employees doubtful, particulary when the corporation is sanctioned by a state (corporations working in Iraq are sanctioned by the US State Department). Singer sums it up: "The general result is that, contrary to common belief, a total ban on mercenaries does not exist in international law. More importantly, the existing laws do not adequately deal with the full variety of private military actors. That is, they are specifically aimed at only the individuals working against national governments or politically recognized movements of national liberation."

Over the long-run, there will be a regulatory regime to regulate PMCs. The most likely location for an oversight body will be in the UN (which will determine whether a PMC is sanctioned or not according to conventions). Additionally, enforcement will likely be done by national governments in support of the world court. This improvements to the existing control system will likely consist of:

  • Standards of conduct and quality. This will require audits.
  • Rules for the treatment of PMC employees if captured. A Geneva convention for UN sanctioned PMCs is in order.
  • Rules on when PMCs may be employed. This difficult subject will require substantial negotiation by all parties.

Until these rules are adopted and enforced globally, there is the potential of severe problems. These include:

  • The trial and execution of PMC employees for war crimes (they are not protected by the Geneva conventions). This is very likely to occur in Iraq.
  • Gross misconduct by untrained, unqualified PMC personnel in a war zone.
  • The establishment and operation of PMCs that operate against the international community of nations.

guerrilla entrepreneurship

The long history of warfare is dominated by military entrepreneurs. That dominance was overturned only recently (within an historical context) with the rise of the nation-state and its ideologically motivated armies. However, the trend is going in the other direction, and quickly. Military entrepreneurship is again on the rise. We can see the adoption of military entrepreneurs by the coalition in Iraq. Private military companies (PMCs) field the second largest military force in Iraq, after the US -- the UK is a distant third.

This shift towards military entrepreneurship is even more pronounced in the insurgency in Iraq. Almost all of the guerrillas we are currently fighting were formed through this process. This should come as no surprise to readers of history (and particularly readers of this author, since it appeared here first). Arab warfare, until late in this century, was driven entirely by entrepreneurship. For example: Lawrence of Arabia, the father of modern guerrilla warfare, used combinations of direct payments and the promise of loot to build his forces. Faith played a major part, but it was almost always secondary.

Recent reports confirm from the US military analysts confirm the financial nature of the open source bazaar in Iraq:

  • "Unlimited amounts" of violence capital for guerrilla entrepreneurs is flowing into Iraq from ex-Baathists, relatives of Saddam Hussein, Saudi sources, and bin Laden. Given global guerrilla ROIs (returns on investment) of up to 100,000 x, this should be cause for alarm.
  • Loot from convoy hijackings, theft of oil through bunkering, and ransoms play a major part of the motivation for attacks. Fully 80% of the attacks fall into this category.
  • A granular competitive market. There are over 50 guerrilla groups active in Iraq. The sheer diversity of the effort indicates a process that is very similar to historical patterns of Arab warfare.
  • Price schedules for attacks. The going rate for placing an IED is $100-$300 (more for an RPG attack).

A New Dynamic
The financial dynamic we see in action in Iraq is a hallmark of global guerrilla warfare. It also creates its own dynamic. The destruction of the pillars of globalization through attacks on systems (both infrastructure and markets) serve to keep Iraq a failed state. As a failed state, Iraq is unable to provide economic alternatives to the insurgency. Further, even though Iraq is a failed state, it is awash in money. Fortunes will be made through the perpetuation of its chaos (as we see with the Narco warlords in Afghanistan, who combined generate $2.5 billion a year in revenue).

Given this trend line, we will likely see more advanced forms of this in the future, particularly market-derived financing. Guerrilla entrepreneurs will use prior knowledge of attacks to generate revenue from global financial markets (NOTE: this fits the strategy of fourth generation warfare -- it turns the strength of an enemy into a weakness). These efforts will include:

  • Assaults on individual corporations Attacks on resources (particularly oil infrastructure) will influence the oil market. Billions could be made through this process.
  • Attacks on oil infrastructure. Global guerrilla methods make it possible for the rise of a "Shadow OPEC" and all the financial leverage that entails.
  • Taking states hostage.Global financial markets control the world. States exist to compete within them (the US does too, but it often doesn't acknowledge the fact). If a state underpreforms it is harshly punished regardless of the reasons. It is likely we will see a nation state targeted/threatened with infrastructure disruption unless they make a large ransom payment. States are willing to pay (the recent payment by Italy for the release of hostages is an example). Many aren't, but after some well orchestrated examples, they will likely to reverse that stance

More guerrilla entrepreneurship

Some stats from Somali pirate:

  • 4 ships were taken on December 16th, 2008 (one, a Chinese vessel got help from Coalition helicopters).
  • 120 ships attacked and 40 ships seized over the last year.
  • $120 million in ransoms for those ships were realized by the pirates.

As gaps in the global network open up, guerrilla entrepreneurship is sure to follow. The rewards are substantial.

Gandhi: Behind the Mask of Divinity

By G. B. Singh

Reviewed by Baldev Singh

"Truth comes out breaking the walls of a fortress" is a Punjabi saying. For the lovers of truth G. B. Singh has exploded the Gandhi myth – apostle of peace, emancipator of untouchables and liberator of India by peaceful means from the British yoke – by publishing his labor of love, Gandhi: Behind the Mask of Divinity. G. B. Singh studied Gandhi for over twenty years collecting Gandhi’s speeches, writings and other documents, which the promoters of Gandhi left out intentionally to create a twentieth century messiah by fusing Jesus Christ and Vishnu. The oppressors – the proponents of colonialism, slavery, racism and casteism - have imposed their own version of history on the victims through manipulation, deception and hypocrisy. For example there is holocaust museum in the capital of United States in the memory of six million Jews who fell victim to the atrocities of Nazis in World War II. It is commendable and such museums should be built in every capital in the world to remind people of the heinous crimes of the Nazis. But why not a museum about the genocide of native Americans or a museum about slavery in the capital of United States? It takes moral courage to look into the face of truth! In order to avoid the obligation to intervene in Rwanda, the Western powers led by President Clinton put pressure on the United Nations Security Council not to characterize the mass murder of Tootsies as genocide.

The making of Gandhi myth stared in South Africa by white Christian clergy. Rev. Joseph J. Doke, a Baptist Minster was the first to write the biography of M. K. Gandhi. Soon many other European and American clergymen and writers rushed in to make their input. John H. Holmes, a Unitarian pastor from New York praised Gandhi in his writings and sermons with titles like: Gandhi: The Modern Christ, Mahatma Gandhi: The Greatest Man since Jesus Christ, Mahatma Ji: Reincarnation of Christ and Gandhi before Pilate. Romain Rolland, French Nobel Laureate in literature looked at Gandhi not only as a Hindu saint, but also another Christ. He wrote Gandhi’s new biography in French. The English translation of this book opens with: He is the One Luminous, Creator of All, Mahatma. Impressed with lavish propaganda about Gandhi in the West, the Hindu propaganda machine came into action and it churned out a plethora of literature to elevate Gandhi to the status of twentieth century Hindu god – "The seventh reincarnation of Vishnu, Lord Rama," proclaimed Krishnalal Shridharni. Portraits of Gandhi depicted him as Hindu avatar and Christian saint. The Indian government under Prime Minister Indra Gandhi financed one-third the cost of the production of the movie "Gandhi" for the portrayal of Gandhi as "an absolute pacifist."

The Christian clergy had an ulterior motive in building the Gandhi myth. They thought that by elevating Gandhi to a 20th century messiah and then converting him would open the flood gate for evangelizing Hindu masses. Little did they realize that Gandhi hoodwinked them with his insincere statements about Christianity? He was a die-hard Hindu, a true believer and defender of the caste order – the essence of Hinduism?

Gandhi apologists indulged in gross deception by claiming that Gandhi’s Satyagrah in South Africa was in the defense of the rights of native people. Nothing could be further from truth than this bald lie. How could Gandhi, a diehard supporter of the caste system think of the welfare of African blacks he regarded lower than the Untouchables of India - slightly above the animal level? His Satyagrah was for the better treatment of Indians, who, according to Gandhi were treated the same way as savage Kaffirs (native people) were. In his stay of twenty years in South Africa, he had no social contacts with the Kaffirs, as he did not see any common ground with them in the daily affairs of life. He was horrified when he was lodged with "natives" in the same jail ward. He did not like wearing the same clothes with label "N" born by the natives, nor he liked their food and sharing lavatory with them. It was the jail experience, which brought out his racism in the open. " Kaffir and Chinese prisoners are wild, murderous and given to immoral ways. Kaffirs are as a general rule uncivilized – the convicts even more so. They are troublesome, very dirty and live almost like animal."

He proclaimed that the British Empire was for the welfare of the whole world and he accepted the superiority and predominance of white race. But he reminded the white people that upper caste Indians share with the Europeans a common heritage – the blood of the noble Aryan race. According to him it is Aryan blood, which is responsible for the advancement of human civilization. He suggested to Rev, Doke to civilize the Kaffirs by converting them to Christianity and by infusing Aryan blood into their race. He told the white colonists that the preservation of racial purity (Apartheid) was as important to the Indians as to Europeans.

He urged the colonial authorities to raise a volunteer militia of Indians to fight for the Empire. He told the Natal authorities that it would be a "criminal folly" if they did not enlist Indians for the war. He was rebuffed with sarcastic and derogatory comments about the fighting ability of people like Gandhi. However, his persistence persuaded the authorities to form a volunteer ambulance corps of Indians under the command of Sergeant-Major Gandhi during the Boer War and Zulu Rebellion. He urged the Indian community to show their loyalty to the British Empire by raising funds for the War. He reminded them that they were in South Africa due to the courtesy of the Empire. It is not for us to judge whether the Kaffir revolt is justified or not. We are co-colonists with whites of this land whereas the black savages are as yet unfit to participate in the political affairs of the colony.

He was a mean spirited parochial Hindu. Sergeant- Major Gandhi selected only Gujarati Hindus as his assistants, three Sergeants and one Corporal in spite of the fact the ambulance corps (20-24 men) was made up mostly of non-Gujaratis with substantial number of Muslims.

The Russian Revolution of 1914 spurted national movements against colonial rule. The British brought Gandhi back to India to sabotage Indian national movement against British rule. The congress Party dominated by Gandhi was set up under the patronage of the British authorities. The "apostle of peace" urged the Indian people to support the British by enlisting in the army during World War I. In his letter he wrote to the Viceroy in1930, he said, " One of his reason for launching the Civil Disobedient Movement is to contain the violence of revolutionaries."

On the advice of white promoters of Gandhi, black clergy and civil rights leaders traveled to India to seek Gandhi’s advice about solving the problem of segregation and civil rights of blacks. How little did they know that Gandhi regarded the black people slightly above the animal level? Moreover, they were ignorant of the fact that caste system was originally imposed, as racial discrimination (Varna Ashrama Dharma) similar to the Apartheid system, on the black natives of India by their Caucasian conquerors. But later on due to emergence of new racial groups due to miscegenation between the two groups, Varna Ashrama Dharma evolved into caste system tied to hereditary occupations. Untouchabilty is as integral a part of Hindu faith as anti- Semitism of the Nazis. It is noteworthy that not a single black leader met Dr. B. R. Ambedkar – M. A. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University, M.Sc. and D.Sc. degrees from London University and Bar-at-Law from Grey’s Inn, London - who was the undisputed leader of the Untouchables at that time. Gandhi propaganda machine manipulated the visit of black leaders, as it did not want them to find truth about Gandhi’s views on the caste system. "I believe in Varnashrama (caste system) which is the law of life. The law of Varna (color and / or caste) is nothing but the law of conservation of energy. Why should my son not be scavenger if I am one? He, Shudra (lowest caste) may not be called a Brahmin (uppermost caste), though he (Shudra) may have all the qualities of a Brahmin in this birth. And it is a good thing for him (Shudra) not to arrogate a Varna (caste) to which he is not born. It is a sign of true humility."

In 1921, Gandhi delivered violent speeches inciting racial hatred against the British. During bloody demonstrations and riots against the visit of Prince of Wales, William Francis Doherty, an American citizen working in Bombay was murdered. Gandhi personally got involved in the cover up of this gruesome murder through bribery and intimidation, as he was concerned that the details of this murder would tarnish Gandhi’s image in the West.

It is a cruel joke and one of the biggest fabrications of the twentieth century that Gandhi won Indian freedom without spilling a drop of blood. The truth is that it was the devastating effect of World War II that forced the British government to dismantle its Colonial Empire. Moreover, it was Gandhi and his Hindu dominated Congress party that engineered the partition of the country on communal lines, as the Muslim dominant states stood in the way of high caste Hindus to set up their Ram Raj (mythical Hindu kingdom) based on caste ideology. Additionally, the Partition of India in 1947 is one of the major upheavals of the twentieth century. In the State of Punjab alone, 11-12 million people lost their homes and hearths where their ancestors had lived for centuries. May be as many as one million people perished in the communal frenzy and thousands of young women were kidnapped while Gandhi was reciting the murderous sermons from his favorite scripture – Bhagvad Gita. He kept insisting up to the last moment that the country would be partitioned only over his dead body!

The ascetic in loincloth used to sleep in buff with naked young girls to perform experiments to test his celibacy. Dr. Sushila Nayar told Ved Mehta that she used to sleep with Gandhi as she regarded him as a Hindu god. The man, who had taken vow of poverty, demanded and got even in jail the same comforts enjoyed by British high officials in India.

The "apostle of peace," who counseled a Jewish delegation" to oppose the evil of Nazism by "soul force" - by committing mass suicide, was all praise for annexing Kashmir by armed aggression.

He told his Sikh followers that rusty sword is useless in the age of Atom Bomb. The development of nuclear weapons by India - a country that ranks among the poorest in the world and is near the bottom of human development index chart of the United Nations – exposes the real face of the "absolute pacifist" and the nation that calls him "father." After all didn’t lord Krishna tell Arjana during the battle of Mahabharata "Victory is truth."

Although, the Indian people have started peeking at the man behind the mask of divinity, there is no let up in the perpetuation of Gandhi myth in the West, especially the United States.

G. B. Singh rightfully deserves the accolades for bringing out the truth about Gandhi from Gandhi’s own mouth.

THE MYTH OF THE MAHATMA: M.K. GANDHI IN SOUTH AFRICA

By VELU ANNAMALAI, Ph.D.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. might have heard the word of non-violence from Gandhi, but it is certain that Dr. King did not know the true colors of Mr. Gandhi. From the beginning to the end, M.K. Gandhi was loyal to imperialism. The Western news media and their Indian allies by a massive propaganda exercise created the illusion of sainthood around Gandhi and made people believe that he fought Apartheid in South Africa, and in the process of doing so developed a new method of non-violent struggle called satyagraha. Nothing is farther from the truth. Gandhi, for the major part of his life, worshiped British imperialism and too often proudly proclaimed himself a lover of the Empire. He was Kipling's Gunga Din in flesh and blood.

To understand Gandhi's politics in South Africa, it is essential to note the three fundamental trends which all along persisted underneath all his activities. They were:

(1) his loyalty to the British Empire,

(2) his apathy with regard to the Indian "lower castes", India's indigenous population, and

(3) his virulent anti-African racism.

Gandhi was once thrown out of a train compartment which was reserved exclusively for the Whites. It was not that Gandhi was fighting on behalf of the local Africans that he broke the rule in getting into a Whites' compartment. No! that was not the reason. Gandhi was so furious that he and his merchant caste Indians (Banias) were treated on par with the local Africans. This is the real reason for his fighting race discrimination in South Africa, and he had absolutely no concern about the pitiable way the Africans were treated by the Whites. On June 2, 1906 he commented in the Indian Opinion that "Thanks to the Court's decision, only clean Indians (meaning upper caste Hindu Indians) or colored people other than Kaffirs, can now travel in the trains."

During the `Kaffir Wars' in South Africa he was a regular Gunga Din, who volunteered to organize a brigade of Indians to put down the Zulu uprising and was decorated himself for valor under fire.

Gandhi said on September 26, 1896 about the African people: "Ours is one continued struggle sought to be inflicted upon us by the Europeans, who desire to degrade us to the level of the raw Kaffir, whose occupation is hunting and whose sole ambition is to collect a certain number of cattle to buy a wife, and then pass his life in indolence and nakedness."

Again in an editorial on the Natal Municipal Corporation Bill, in the Indian Opinion of March 18, 1905, Gandhi wrote: "Clause 200 makes provision for registration of persons belonging to uncivilized races (meaning the local Africans), resident and employed within the Borough. One can understand the necessity of registration of Kaffirs who will not work, but why should registration be required for indentured Indians...?" Again on September 9, 1905, Gandhi wrote about the local Africans as: "in the majority of cases it compels the native to work for at least a few days a year" (meaning that the locals are lazy).

Nothing could be farther from the truth that Gandhi fought against Apartheid, which many propagandists in later years wanted people to believe. He was all in favor of continuation of White domination and the oppression of Blacks in South Africa.

In the Indian Opinion of March 25, 1905, Gandhi wrote on a Bill regulating fire-arms: "In the instance of fire-arms, the Asiatic has been most improperly bracketed with the natives. The British Indian does not need any such restrictions as are imposed by the Bill on the natives regarding the carrying of fire-arms. The prominent race can remain so by preventing the native from arming himself. Is there the slightest vestige of justification for so preventing the British Indians?"

Gandhi always advised Indians not to align with other political groups in either colored or African communities. He was strongly opposed to the commingling of races. In the Indian Opinion of September 4, 1904, Gandhi wrote: "Under my suggestion, the Town Council (of Johannesburg) must withdraw the Kaffirs from the Location. About this mixing of the Kaffirs with the Indians I must confess I feel most strongly. It think it is very unfair to the Indian population, and it is an undue tax on even the proverbial patience of my countrymen."

In the Indian Opinion of September 24, 1903, Gandhi said: "We believe as much in the purity of races as we think they (the Whites) do...by advocating the purity of all races."

Again on December 24, 1903, in the Indian Opinion Gandhi stated that: "so far as British Indians are concerned, such a thing is particularly unknown. If there is one thing which the Indian cherishes more than any other, it is purity of type."

When he was fighting on behalf of Indians, he was not fighting for all the Indians, but only for his rich merchant class upper caste Hindus!

In the Anglo-Boer War of 1899, Gandhi, in spite of his own belief that truth was on the side of the Boers, formed an ambulance unit in support of the British forces. He was very earnest about taking up arms and laying down his life for his beloved Queen. He led his men on to the battlefield and received a War Medal.

Gandhi joined in the orgy of Zulu slaughter when the Bambata Rebellion broke out. One needs to read the entire history of Bambata Rebellion to place Gandhi's nazi war crimes in its proper perspective.

THE STAGE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY'S EPOCHAL CONFLICT

Sorry for the slowdown in posting. I'm thinking through the implications of our current situation and the process is slow going as I run it through my frameworks. Here's some early thinking that you may find useful (or not):

Setting the Stage

The prolonged economic and financial crisis of the 1930's (the Depression) forced the development of the modern nation-state. To mitigate the effects of this crisis, the nation-state learned to mobilize and manage national economies on a scale never seen before. Inevitably, the process used to extend control wasn't uniform, it took three different ideological routes -- government control, corporate control, and a corporate/government market mitigated symbiosis. This eventually yielded a fight for dominance that resulted in both WW2 and the Cold War. One approach eventually won.

Unfortunately, it's growing increasingly clear that we've entered another prolonged economic and financial crisis, which may become the Depression of the 2010's. So, if we follow the historical pattern (important: while history doesn't repeat, it rhymes), we will likely see new organizational solutions develop that mitigate the effects of this crisis. If this is true, it's very useful to identify what's different between this crisis and the last:

  • Global and not national. Unlike the previous, this potential Depression will be global -- aka HUGE, FAST, and COMPLEX -- and not national. This means that the solutions needed to mitigate its impact will only occur on the global stage.
  • Systemic disruptions. The second difference is that we will continue see numerous systemic shocks on a global scale. These shocks will increase in frequency as the dynamic instability of the global system becomes acute. Organizational structures that aren't resilient will be washed away.
  • Post-ideological. Mass movements and ideologies are dead. Global markets and social fragmentation now rule. This means that we can't expect a repeat of the 20th Century solution set.

The question now becomes, what will these "solutions" that mitigate the effects of the "coming" Depression look like? The natural reflex is to assume that our nation-states will formulate a response. However, that doesn't appear to be a well founded assumption since this global problem is MUCH bigger, faster and more complex than they can handle. Further, nation-states have been in decline for nearly 35 years as they gradually ceded elements of sovereignty to a now dominant global marketplace (which was built to help America's ideological solution triumph over Communism during the Cold War). As a result, we can expect that moves by nation-states to prop up a global scale problem won't work. Worse, many states will likely go broke in the process,* well before the problem is mitigated. Instead, we can expect -- and this is purely speculative since the real responses won't be truly visible until well into the next decade -- three potential solutions to emerge (how they fight and who is likely to win is the most interesting aspect of this emergence to me). More on this in a later post.

*Will many nation-states go broke? Almost inevitably. For example, the US national debt went up 5%, or $574 billion, in only one month (October 2008). That is likely only the start of vastly more red ink. Why? The debt overhang for America, is estimated to be 370% of GDP (a combination of public, private, and corporate debt). This equates to $30 Trillion in debt over the long term sustainable level of 160% of GDP. That excess $30 Trillion in debt will need to be reduced to $0 before we can be restored to any semblance of fiscal health according to the existing model (in the last Depression, we went from 260% debt/GDP to 140%). There is a similar vulnerability to excess debt in many of the world's nation-states.

**Note that there is now, for the first time, a robust market for Credit Default Swaps (a financial product that allows you to bet on bankruptcy) tied to the solvency of the United States government

Red Hat 2.1 linux EXPLOIT

There is a security hole in Red Hat 2.1, which installs the game abuse,
/usr/lib/games/abuse/abuse.console suid root. The abuse.console program
loads its files without absolute pathnames, assuming the user is running
abuse from the /usr/lib/games/abuse directory. One of these files in the
undrv program, which abuse executes as root. If the user is not in the
abuse directory when running this, an arbitrary program can be substituted
for undrv, allowing the user to execute arbitrary commands as root.
If abuse.console needs to be run by users other than root at the console,
provisions need to be made in the code to not execute or load any files
as root.

Program: /usr/lib/games/abuse/abuse.console suid root
Affected Operating Systems: Red Hat 2.1 linux distribution
Requirements: account on system
Patch: chmod -s /usr/lib/games/abuse/abuse.console
Security Compromise: root
Author: Dave M. (davem@cmu.edu)
Synopsis: abuse.console runs undrv without an absolute
pathname while executing as root, allowing
a user to substitute the real undrv with

How to dualboot Linux and winblows XP

If you want to install XP on your machine alongside your existing Linux installation on the same physical drive which already has Ubuntu 8.04 installed. You will have to create space on the Linux partition to install winblows XP.
XP bootloader is fairly clumsy when it comes to dualbooting and will overwrite GRUB completely. You will have to reinstall GRUB to the MBR and configure it to dualboot both Ubuntu and XP.

So regardless of which bootloader you end up using, it's a very good move to first back up the GRUB bootloader. It's easy to lose it and unless you know how to re-write it you will hav to re-install Ubundu. tongue.gif

Ok so first start your Ubuntu and go to Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal.
Then, type in sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst.
This text file contains all the information GRUB uses to configure various boot options.

Make a backup of the file by going to File, Save As and selecting a different location. Or take a full copy of the contents and place it into a new text file. If you can, create the backup on a removable disk or networked location. smile.gif

You will need to create space on the hard drive for XP, so this will involve resizing the main Ubuntu partition. Restart the system using the Ubuntu Live CD as this gives you access to GNOME Partition Editor. When the CD loads, select "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer".
Once the CD loads, go to System, Administration, Partition Editor.
Right-click on the main data partition which has been formatted with ext3 - it should be /dev/sda1 - and select "Resize/Move". Move the slider from the right to shrink the ext3 partition and create free space on the hard drive, which will take the NTFS XP partition. Make sure that the free space is sufficient to hold XP (at least 2GB - preferably 5GB). Then click "Resize/Move" to confirm the selection, and "Apply" back in the main screen to carry out the pending change.

Restart the system with the winblows XP CD and boot into the install program.
In my opinion nfortunately XP isn't so adaptive at handling existing partitions during installation. It detects the two Ubuntu partitions and marks then C: and E: accordingly.
The remaining unpartitioned space which is available for XP will be marked as F:.
For the OS and the vast majority of winblows applications which have properly-coded installation scripts, this is not a problem. Some older applications will assume that C: is the system partition and may bring up errors. sad.gif
There are ways of changing the drive letter assignation of the system partition, but in this scenario it's strongly discouraged.
To insult to injury, XP detects the Linux partition as an active system partition and won't install unless it marks this partition as inactive.

Oki once XP has been installed, it will boot happily into XP but there's no sign of Ubuntu and you will be like WTF???. Tho to reinstate GRUB as the system bootloader it needs to be reinstalled into the MBR.
Boot the system from the Ubuntu Live CD and select "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer".
Open a Terminal session again - Applications, Accessories, Terminal
To enter the GRUB configuration mode, type in "sudo grub" and press Enter. Then type in the following commands in sequence:
- root (hd0,0)
- setup (hd0)
- quit
- exit

Now once you enter that you need to rboot the system you'll get the GRUB bootloader but XP won't be an option - we need to add this to the boot options.
Boot into Ubuntu and open up another Terminal session. Then, type in sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst then scroll down to the bottom of the file and type in the following text strings:
title winblows XP
root (hd0,1)
makeactive
chainloader +1

Save the file and reboot. When the GRUB loader launches hit ESC for the boot menu. winblows XP is the last option - select it and XP will load.
And thats it now you have two OS's and you can chose which one you would like to start.

Alternate method to repair grub with Knoppix

Here's an alternate method to repaid the boot loader if you've installed winblows. Im assuming knoppix, but im not sure if you can do this with other live cd's as well.

First identify the root partition (im assuming this is something like /dev/hda1).
Mount the partition as writeable (if it isnt).

CODE
sudo mount -o dev,rw /mnt/hda1

Once mounted restore grub:

CODE
sudo chroot /mnt/hda1 grub-install /dev/hda

Note: if you use devfs or for some reason the chroot environment doesn't work you can mount the file system with write permissions then run:

CODE
sudo grub-install -root-directory=/mnt/hda1 /dev/hda

Knoppix also has an update-grub utility (i don't know if it's knoppix specific or if other distros have it). This will automatically generate a menu.lst file for you by scanning the disk for usable kernels and automatically create the menu.lst file. To use it you must run it in a chroot environment. Assuming the root partition is /mnt/hda1:

CODE
cd /mnt/hda1
sudo mkdir boot/grub
sudo cp /sbin/update-grub ./
sudo chroot /mnt/hda1 /update-grub

The final command will prompt you to create a menu file. Click yes.

If you dont have grub installed but want to you can with knoppix. First use the above commands to create the menu file. If the first time grub-update is run it fails to detect the correct root device to use (lets say instead of hda1 you use hda2) open the newly generated menu.lst file (/boot/grub/menu.lst) and edit the line:

CODE
# groot=(hd0,0)

to

CODE
# groot=(hd0,1)

DO NOT REMOVE THE HASH (comment)!! This line is simply a hint to the grub-update tool. Keep it commented out.

The numbering system is pretty simple. It starts from 0 rather than 1. So hda1 = hd0,0 hda2 = 0,1 hda3 = 0,2 and so forth.

Once this is done rerun update-grub to update the menu.lst file:

CODE
cd /mnt/hda2
sudo chroot /mnt/hda2 /update-grub

(Assuming your root is hda2)

Once this is done you are ready to install grub to the boot sector. This doesn't require a chroot environment but you must tell grub-install to use /mnt/hda1 (or whatever) as your root directory:

CODE
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/hda1 /dev/hda
I hope you find this Topic helpfull. tongue.gif

winblows Vista - Bitlocker, Anyone played around with it?

So any of you guys/gals played about with Microsofts "Bit Locker" security software? It seems to have a loophole that totalyl comprimises its use - basically if the machine is put into sleepmode its possible to wake up the machine and use the machine stright away bypassing BitLockers encryption. Crazy really. So if your going to steal a laptop with bit locker make sure the user has logged in and place it into sleep mode before you steal it - hey prestro you've bypassed the security.

Just incase your not sure what BitLocker is - its the Drive Encryption software thats bundled with Vista Ultimate Edition (I think it comes with the Enterprise edition too). It encrypts the whole drive using AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) with key sizes being 128 or 256 bits.

BUILDING SELF ESTEEM

If you feel that you are not “good enough”, or that you are undeserving of prosperity and friendship; if you feel that you “don’t belong” or are afraid of success, the odds are good that you have some problems with self-esteem

Having low self esteem takes an enormous toll on the quality of your life. You take fewer risks, which limits your opportunities, both personally and professionally. You are reluctant to voice or acknowledge your needs. You are probably also haunted by past mistakes and making future ones.

The good news is that self-esteem is self-taught (no one was born with low self-esteem) , and the solution to raising your self-esteem lies within you. The tools you've used to (unconsciously) lower your self esteem are the same ones you use to raise it. Here are some hints to help you raise your self-esteem:

1. Stop comparing yourself to other people.
If you play this game, you're likely to compare yourself in a negative way and set yourself up for continuing to have low self esteem.
Why continue to play a game where you've set the rules against yourself, so that you're less likely to win! You will never be as rich as Bill Gates or able to hit as many home runs as Barry Bonds. You can’t be them, but they cannot be you, either.

2. Don't keep putting yourself down!
You can't develop high self esteem if you constantly repeat negative comments about your skills and abilities. Other people will pick up on it and take on board the negative way you view yourself. How are they likely to treat you? Also don't beat yourself up over "mistakes" that you've made - learn how to reframe them so that they work for you.

3. Accept all compliments graciously.
Don't dismiss or ignore them. Don’t look at your feet and say, “aw shucks, I really don’t deserve this praise”. You do deserve the praise; that is why you are receiving it. The proper response to any compliment is simple – say ‘Thank you” – and mean it.

4. Mix with positive and supportive people.
Negative people can put you and your ideas down and it lowers your self esteem. On the other hand, when you are surrounded by supportive people, you feel better about yourself, which helps to raise your self esteem. Learn how to develop your positive personal support network.

5. Acknowledge your positive qualities and skills.
Too many people with low self esteem constantly put themselves down (back to no 1 again!) and don't appreciate their many positive attributes. Learn how to truly affirm and value your many excellent qualities. If you find this difficult, ask others to tell you. They'll come up with things you would never have imagined!

6. Stop putting up with stuff!
Not voicing or acknowledging your needs means that you are probably tolerating more than you should. Find out what you're putting up with and zap those tolerations. By doing so, you're giving yourself the message that you're worth it.

7. Make positive contributions to others.
This doesn't mean that you constantly do for others what they could be doing for themselves. But when you do make a positive contribution to others, you begin to feel more valuable, which increases your sense of your own value and raises your self esteem.

8. Involve yourself in work and activities that you love.
So many people with low self esteem stop doing those activities that they most enjoy. Even if you're not in a position to make immediate changes in your career, you can still devote some of your leisure time to enjoyable hobbies and activities.

Start taking action!

The universe rewards action.

Backing away and avoiding challenges means that your self esteem muscles become weak and flabby.

When you start to take action - regardless of the outcome - you will start to feel better about yourself, develop your self confidence and raise your self esteem.

How to Unlock Your Nokia Cell Phone

Typically when you purchase a cell phone, the company that sold you the phone 'locked' the phone before you bought it, so you can only use it on their network. This means that you can't use your phone on any other network, even if you change the SIM (which is an abbreviation for Subscriber Identity Module) card. The SIM card is the little piece of plastic that identifies your phone to the cellular network. Changing your SIM card to have your phone work on another network is useful especially if you want to travel to another country and want to buy a pre-paid SIM card so you can have cell phone access without roaming charges. There are services that offer to provide unlocking capabilities for a fee, but don't pay for them! You can do it yourself for free, which is the perfect price.

Steps

1. Before trying anything else, contact your service provider and ask for an unlock code. Usually, if you've been a customer of theirs for some time, they will provide you with an unlock code for free. This is, by far, the best way to get your phone unlocked.
2. Download software to generate the unlocking code. Software is available on some websites for free and some pay websites that also offer support if things go wrong. See external links below.
3. Find the Serial number of the cell phone, also known as your IMEI number. This can be done by either removing the back of your cell phone and looking underneath the battery, or simply by typing in *#06# into your cell phone. It should be something like: 030057361439976/05429508118
4. Using the software you have downloaded, enter in your Manufacturer (which is in this case Nokia), your model number, and your IMEI number. Also enter your country and the Network. Calculate the code, this may be different depending on which software you are using. If your phone is the Nokia 3390 phone, select the model 3310, they are the same phone.

* #pw+403927744443466+7#

5. Remove the SIM card from your Nokia phone. This is typically done by removing the back cover of the phone and removing the battery and sliding the card out. Put the battery back in and power the phone on.
6. You will see a message "Insert SIM Card". Enter all of the characters you see in your code, including the # symbols. To get a 'p' press * 3 times, to get a '+' press the * key 2 times, to get a 'w' press the * key 4 times. Disregard any spaces in the code.
7. In order to unlock your phone you generally need to enter only one code. Start with the first one. If your phone is not unlocked by typing the first code (MCC+MNC), use code "7" (Multilock)
8. Once you have finished entering a code that works you should see a message that says "SIM is not restricted" or "Restriction off" message depending on your model. If not, try entering another code. Message "Cannot undo restrictions" means the phone is "hard-locked" and cannot be unlocked by code.

Tips

* Unlocking only applies to GSM phones, phones using other cellular technologies, cannot be unlocked without special software and hardware.
* Switch off the phone. Hold the keys "3", "*" and "Call" and switch the phone on. Keep the buttons held down till you see the word "Formatting..." on the screen. Make sure that the battery is full charged before you attempt this. This should reset the phone lock code.

Warnings

* Attempting to unlock your phone is done at your own risk. Although unlocking your phone is legal, some cell phone operators might choose to void your warranty should you unlock your phone (then again, some cell phone operators won't mind).
* Most phones only allow you to try a certain number of unlock tries, Nokia phones have a limit of 5 tries. After that, the phone becomes "hard-locked", meaning it cannot be unlocked without using special equipment.
* Most of the newer phones will not work with the codes generated by the free unlock programs.

10)When you see your exam timetable, you will invariably figure out that the subject you have studied the worst has the least time gap for preparation
11)everything seems too difficult to study when u look at it wayy before the exam..so u leave it out...and then when u look at it just before ur exam...it becomes so simple...but u dont hv the time to study it..
12)when u study sumthin for ur exam, its difficult
after u finish ur exam, n go thro ur notes again, u realise everytin is actually very easy!
13)MCQs which boil down to 50-50 the option chosen always turns out to be the wrong one(the option left always turns out to be the correct one).
14)you have studied only 50% of syllabus for exam, and 50% paper was only from syllabus. You answer both 25% out of syllabus & 25 % from syllabus...n you make it 50%.
15)Suddenly u feel like watchin all d moviezz wen u know tat u don even hav a minute to waste.
16)when u decide to sit and start studying for ur exam at night there is a power cut.
17)u teach someone the subject, they pass. u fail

The mind of a girl

Hello friends this is my 1st attempt to write blog(since I am lazy I hate blogging).I happened to read this amazing poetry called 'A mind of a girl' written by an acquaintance sometime back ....hmmm wait.. did i just hear you letting out that sigh when i mentioned the word 'poetry' ? You did? then i guess you are quite normal ( Oh you dint eh? then im sure you are super normal...like me :P ) . But let me assure you something, if you are a guy then im sure you're gonna like this piece of work but if you are a girl then im sorry, you're simply gonna love it.

THE MIND OF A GIRL

There exists something very complex and grand
which even Einstien could not understand
It makes every boy's heart go in a whirl,
That thing is - the mind of a girl

A secret no man could ever unravel,
Although far and wide did he travel
To understand what his love really meant,
most men have only, their entire lives spent

Let us men try and break the shackles,
Even if it means a rip on our knuckles,
I'll tell you guys all that I know,
I hope all girls, then forgive me for doing so

A boy likes a girl, primarily for her face,
Also her figure if it's like a curvy vase
Looks do matter for a girl, but there's something more,
It's the boy's character, that's always at the fore

Boys are quite casual, with many girl-friends at a time,
Girls are not quite so, they don't just fall for a dime
They may have many crushes, will never disclose them,
But there's always a special someone, they'll adore like a gem

A girl will take good time, to turn her "like" to "love",
Immediately afterwards, she will want you to take the "vow"
To pledge unflinching love and never ever betray,
This to most boys, is something out of the way

Boys are the first ones, who want to get physical,
But before commiting, girls don't think it's ethical
This is very true and boys seldom make a try,
To get into the girl's place, and know the reason why!

A girl wants a boy to be unique in himself
But every boy imitates a Shahrukh, Salman or Saif!
The girl likes the boy for what he really is,
But the boy wants the girl to become - "like this"!

Girls like their personal space, which boys seldom give
He wants her all the time and becomes very possessive
A girl hates being ruled and finally gives away,
The boy keeps wondering, what went wrong in his way!

A girl will reveal her mind, to a kind and patient boy,
All he needs to do, is just act a bit coy
It's a battle of the sexes, and we boys must win here,
If nothing else, atleast this will bring us some cheer

So remember all that you have now read,
Before on the path of love you tread!
Now you know what is the correct way,
Do what she thinks, before she can even say!
